Most of the people in Medieval England at this point in time had to make their own food. Most food shops were found in towns but most of the people were peasants who lived in villages where these did not exist. Most of the people in england mostly ate bread. People preferred white bread made from wheat flour. However only the richest farmers and lords in villages and manors were able to grow the wheat needed to make white bread for their food.Rye and Barley produced dark and heavy breads. Maslin bread was made from a mixture of rye and wheat flour. After a poor harvest, when grain was in short supply, people were forced to eat beans, peas and even acorns in their bread.Lords of the manor, did not allow peasants on his land to bake their bread in their own houses. All peasants had to pay to use the lords oven.

Up to the start of the middle ages when William the conqueror and the Normans invaded England the only real influence on the types of food consumed.During this area of time the people of the middle ages have always enjoyed to drink, and as water was often very unclean, it was a necessity. The poor drank ale, mead or cider and the rich were able to drink many different types of wines.The elegance of the far east, with its silks, tapestries, precious stones,perfumes,spices,pearls,and ivory, was so enchanting that an enthusiatic crusader.
